DISEC: Addressing the Militarization of Antarctica and Preserving the Antarctic Treaty System in an Era of Geopolitical Competition (Futuristic)

Antartica has sustained the symbol of peace, scientific cooperation and environmental protection based on the Antartica Treaty System (established in 1959). Even though the treaty seeks to prevent territorial conflict, resource exploitation, and military activity, the rising geopolitical competition, technological advancements and climate change are bringing growing challenges to this framework. Military personnel and equipment are allowed for peaceful scientific purposes, but there is a fading line between strategic and peaceful cooperation. In the setting of 2047, Antartica’s crisis is rapidly growing as its melting away, rare earth elements known as dysprosium and samarium, which are core elements for advanced military technologies. While countries are starting to gain access, economic and strategic interests are bringing in concerns, which undermine environmental conservation, and the peaceful principles that have governed Antartica for decades.
